Wii crushing PS3 6 to 1 in Japan

The little console that could is showing the the biggest player in the market how it is done.  The value priced and family friendly Wii console is outselling the highly touted and pricey PlayStation 3 almost 6 to 1.

Nintendo sold 270,974 Wii consoles last month while Sony sold 41,628 PS3s, according to Enterbrain, a Japanese publisher that tracks console sales.

Nintendo has sold about 2.76m Wii consoles in Japan since the launch last December, while Sony has sold 970,270 PS3s since it debuted last November.

About 17,616 Xbox 360 consoles were sold in June.

Who would have thought that the device where motion sensor controllers, average graphics, and a recent history of so-so consoles would be outselling the big boy at Sony and Microsoft.  Maybe companies will rethink their $600 gaming consoles in favor of more price friendly and family friendly systems.  The Wii is still hard to find in some areas and is fetching a premium on autcion sites.

Which console do you have? If you could buy any of the big three right now which would you get?

I-Day! iPhone release in 10 hours!

Walking to work this morning I passed by the AT&T store on Park and 49th in Manhattan.  I was expecting a decent line toiPhone release day June 29th, 2007 be forming in for the 6pm release of the hyped iPhone, but only about 6 people had claimed a front row spot.  Of those 6 the first 2 seemed to be serious customers that came equipped with chairs, reading material, food, and drinks.  The other four waiting for the release of the phone they can’t afford appeared to be panhandlers or line savers.  Oh yes for those that didn’t know people will use the homeless to save spots on line.  If they are gonna be sitting around begging all day anyway why not give them $10 to sit on a line all day with the promise of another $10 later on in the day.  I’ll walk by the store again this evening at 5:30pm and take some shots of the line or lack there of - whichever the case may be!  I still don’t know why some peoplehave been camped out in front of the Apple store on 5th Ave for several days when they could have just walked over to any AT&T store today and been first in line.

iPhone price plans released

The countdown to the release of the iPhone is only 3 days away and today pricing plans came out for the new gadget.  The plans start at $59.99 for a basic plan and go as high as $99.99 per month for some more airtime.  These price plans are in line with comparable plans for smartphones from other carriers, but shares of Apple fell over 2% on the news.

iPhone pricing plans revealedThree monthly plans with a minimum two-year service contract will be available: the $59.99 plan includes 450 minutes of voice time; a $79.99 plan includes 900 minutes; and a $99.99 plan includes 1,350 minutes. All three offer 200 text messages, unlimited data services, minutes that roll over month-to-month and mobile-to-mobile calls. There also is a $36 activation fee.

Customers can pay extra for plans to get more talk time or text messages. Several family-style plans also are available, ranging from $80 a month for 700 shared minutes to $120 for 2,100 shared minutes.

People have already begun camping out for the phone on 5th Ave in New York City.  At&T stores will be closing their doors at 4:30pm on Friday to pepare for the release at 6pm.  They have also hired on 2000 temporary workers to deal with the expected influx of customers and curious  gadget freaks not yet willing to buy the first generation device.  I for one will be one of the folks just checking it out because it will do to smartphones what the iPod did for digital music.

The Blackberry Curve 8300

Research In Motion is resting on its past success in the face of new challengers to the smarphone market place. With the impending release of the Apple iPhone RIM has released a new sleek hand held geared for both business and personal use.Blackberry Curve 8300 The down side for some businesses will be the built-in 2 mega pixel camera with flash, but for personal users it is a nice feature that many do want. The new Curve, or 8300, uses the new trackball navigation instead of the side wheel that most Blackberries are famous for. The Curve will try to position itself as a possible cheaper iPhone alternative for those that want a cool phone, but don’t need $400 in fancy touch screens. The Curve is rumored to be priced around $200 with dealer incentives so before you run to Apple give this one a shot — you might just find it a lot more useful.
